Carl Gabrielson
Special Advisor, Getting to Know Japan Series
Carl is a Ph.D. candidate in East Asian Languages and Cultural Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara. He is currently writing his dissertation based on fourteen months of fieldwork and interviews conducted on U.S. military bases and their surrounding communities across Japan. His research focuses on cultural exchange between U.S. military personnel and Japanese citizens. Carl earned his BA in Interdisciplinary Studies at the Friends World Program of Long Island University (now LIU Global), and his MA in Asian Studies at the University of Hawaii at Manoa.
Prior to starting his Ph.D., Carl taught U.S.-Japan Relations (2011-2015) and was the Program Coordinator for English for Academic Purposes (2012-2015) at Lakeland University Japan in Tokyo. He is also an alumnus of the Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Programme, where he worked with the Sapporo Board of Education from 2005-2008.
