YCAPS Eastern Kamakura Temple Walk

Mori McPherson and Richard Walton will lead a day trip to visit four historic sites in Eastern Kamakura, including one shrine and three temples. This walk will explore temples that are not part of the introductory city tours but are beneficial and central to late Kamakura Period history. The guides will provide historical detail and context.

The itinerary for the day is: 

• 12:00 – Meet in front of Kamakura Station
• Explore the Egara Tenjin Shrine http://www.tenjinsha.com/ 
• Explore the Sugimoto Temple https://sugimotodera.com/ 
• Explore the Hokokuji Temple https://houkokuji.or.jp   (Bamboo Garden & Kyukoan Cafe: matcha green tea and a sweet treat served in a traditional tea ceremony style)

• 16:35 – Meet back in front of Jomyoji Temple to head to the train station

Participants should be prepared for approximately 4 hours of walking, encompassing travel between each temple and time spent exploring each location. Participants are advised to dress appropriately and take precautions, such as using neck coolers, hats, and similar measures. Break opportunities will be limited to facilities at temples. Some vending machines will be available as well as a convenience store on the way from the train station to Sugimoto Temple, but it is advised to bring your own drinks. There will be no lunch break due to limited space to properly sit down and eat, so it is recommended that participants eat prior to the walk. Following the event, participants are invited to join other YCAPS tour members for a drink and grab some food at 12 Taps Pub, a Turkish restaurant with 12 beers on tap, which is right near the train station. YCAPS will be buying the first round.

Cost: YCAPS will provide admission tickets for the Bamboo Garden and entrance including matcha tea and sweets at Kyukoan Cafe at Hokokuji Temple. Participants are required to pay the entrance fee of 300 JPY for Sugimoto Temple, 100 JPY for Jomyoji Temple and approximately 220 JPY for the bus fare from Jomyoji Temple to Kamakura Station. *Other food, beverages, & souvenirs will be the responsibility of individual participants.*
