July 26 YCAPS Indo-Pacific Maritime Hour: Nuclearization of Maritime Security in East Asia

On July 26th, 2024, there was a webinar titled “Nuclearization of Maritime Security in East Asia,” featuring Dr. Chiew-Ping Hoo, co-founder and Senior Fellow of the East Asian International Relations (EAIR) Caucus, and moderated by Dr. John Bradford, YCAPS Executive Director.

Dr. Hoo explored the increasing intersection between nuclear and maritime domains in East Asia. She discussed the ongoing militarization of the South and East China Seas, noting the establishment of SSBN bastions and the potential deployment of floating nuclear power plants to support military activities. Dr. Hoo highlighted the trend toward nuclearization in maritime security within the civilian sector, driven by the adoption of nuclear energy in maritime shipping to reduce carbon footprints and the proliferation of dual-use technology in the shipping industry. She emphasized the challenges posed by separate legal frameworks governing maritime and nuclear domains, and the lack of specialized expertise and dialogues bridging these fields. The webinar underscored the strategic implications of these developments for East Asia, reflecting on the region's security and economic dynamics amid US-China nuclear competition. Dr. Hoo's research on Korean peninsula security and the responses of Northeast and Southeast Asia to evolving nuclear policies provided a comprehensive perspective on these critical issues.
