Indo-Pacific Maritime GENIE (Governance Expanded Network for Innovation and Education)

YCAPS, in partnership with La Trobe Asia, is excited to announce The Indo-Pacific Maritime GENIE (Governance Expanded Network for Innovation and Education), a program that will create a cadre of emerging leaders for advancing regional maritime governance. Through this program, senior policy experts will mentor participants from Australia and Southeast Asia and help them develop their ideas into policy recommendations for the Australian government.

During the period from June 2024 to March 2025 participants will receive training through a series of tailored online professional development workshops designed to help develop skillsets and mature innovation. These training events will be complemented by in-person workshops in Jakarta and Sydney. Accomodation and flights to attend the workshops will be covered by the program. The workshop will involve significant opportunities for hands-on activities, site visits, and team building.

We now are accepting applications from early career leaders with an original idea related to improving maritime governance in the Indo-Pacific.

Eligibility:

- At least 3 years of relevant experience in related fields

- Demonstrated interest in maritime issues and are seeking advanced training in maritime governance

- Available to participate in online workshops and in-person workshops in Sydney (21-25 October 2024) and Jakarta (13-17 January 2025).

- Committed to remaining engaged with other participants via a long-term collaborative network.

- Only Australian and ASEAN nationals are eligible. Applicants from Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, and the Philippines (can be based anywhere) are particularly encouraged to apply.

- Representatives of communities which are typically under-represented in maritime governance activities are particularly encouraged to apply.

To Apply:

- Applications should be made by 30 April 2024 via this form.

- The submission form should include a brief description of their innovation, an essay about what they hope to gain from the programme, and their C.V.

- The curriculum will be co-designed by La Trobe Asia. This program receives funding support from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade’s Australia-ASEAN Council.

FAQ:

-Question: My nationality is of a state other than Australia and the ASEAN members, but I have a connection with one of these countries. Can I apply? Answer: Only nationals of Australia and ASEAN member states are eligible for this programme.

-Question: Will there be support fortravel/accommodation for the in-person workshops? Answer: Yes, the program will fund travelto the workshops in Jakarta and Sydney.

-Question: I’d like to apply for the programme. but I cannot join the workshops because of scheduling conflicts. Can I apply? Answer: Please note this in your application. Priority will be given to those who can travel, but particularly qualified candidates may be invited to join the webinars only should there be space available.

-Question: Does the the Maritime GENIE primarily cater to government officials or are professionals from other sectors welcome? Answer: The programme is open to professionals from all sectors who are interested in improving regional maritime governance.

-Question: How is maritime governance different from maritime security? Answer: As a general definition, “maritime governance” refers to the capacity to enforce the framework of laws, regulations, policies, and institutions generated both within the legal jurisdictions of states and the international community that seek to establish “good order at sea.” Maritime security is the desired condition that relates to that good order at sea.
