On a Sunny and slightly rainy day December 21st, sixteen enthusiastic participants joined YCAPS for the Nebukawa Walk led by Richard Walton. The hike took us through the picturesque Hayakawa Kataura Walking Trail, a route that blends historical significance with breathtaking coastal views. Despite some light rain, the weather gifted us with vibrant rainbows, adding a magical touch to an already incredible experience.
The Journey began at Nebukawa Station, where participants gathered at 10:00 AM. After brief introductions and a quick rundown of the itinerary, we set off for a day filled with natural beauty and historical discovery. The 4-5 hour hike took us through lush greenery, peaceful trails, and a shortcut to Hayakawa Station toward the end.
Along the way, Richard Walton shared fascinating insights about the trail and its historical significance. One of the highlights was visiting the Ishibashiyama Battlefield, the site of the famous 1180 battle where Yoritomo Minamoto, the founder of the Kamakura Shogunate, faced a massive army under Taira command. Though Yoritomo suffered a defeat here, this event marked a pivotal moment in Japanese history, and visiting this site brought its stories to life.
We also stopped at Sanada Reisha Shrine, dedicated to Yoichi Yoshitada Sanada, a revered figure who perished during the Ishibashiyama battle. The shrine’s serene ambiance and historical context made it a meaningful addition to the day’s journey.
A Special Thanks to Richard Walton for expertly leading the hike and providing such an engaging experience and to all the participants who braved the weather and made the event unforgettable.
