YCAPS at the 12th Annual World Ocean Summit & Expo

YCAPS was honored to participate in the 12th Annual World Ocean Summit & Expo, held at the ANA Intercontinental Tokyo on March 12-13, 2025. This premier global event brought together policymakers, industry leaders, scientists, and non-governmental organizations to explore the latest advancements in ocean sustainability, marine security, and the blue economy.

Discussions at the summit underscored the growing significance of the blue economy and the need to balance economic development with conservation efforts, particularly in Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands. Experts highlighted the role of sustainable practices in fostering resilient coastal communities while preserving marine ecosystems. Maritime security was another key focus, with speakers addressing challenges such as illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing, piracy, and the need for stronger international partnerships in maritime law enforcement. Technology and innovation also took center stage, with advancements in satellite monitoring, AI-driven ocean mapping, and autonomous marine research vessels showcasing the potential for cutting-edge solutions to oceanic challenges.

A surprise highlight of the summit was a speech by none other than Japan’s Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, who addressed the importance of international cooperation in tackling ocean sustainability and security challenges.

On the sidelines of the summit, YCAPS hosted a seminar on March 11 by Dr. Genevieve Quirk on "Oceania's Crowded Oceanscape," which examined the intensifying competition for strategic influence in Oceania among external and metropolitan powers. Additionally, a private lunch discussion with one of the speakers at the World Ocean summit, Taiwan Ocean Affairs Deputy Minister Huang Hsiang-Wen, was held with YCAPS on March 14 allowing for valuable discussions on Taiwan’s maritime policies and regional cooperation efforts.

As an organization committed to enhancing regional expertise and strategic dialogue, YCAPS actively engaged with both international and regional experts, as well as institutions focused on maritime affairs. And the summit provided an excellent opportunity to explore collaborative initiatives aimed at strengthening maritime governance and cooperation.
