At a YCAPS dinner in Yokosuka on Saturday, November 6th, Professor Tetsuo Kotani, senior fellow at the Japan Institute of International Affairs, gave a lecture on Japan’s role in a potential crisis in the Taiwan strait. After providing insight into what the current consensus is on the possibility of an attack on Taiwan and discussing the need for coordination between the US and Japan, professor Kotani concluded that political deterrence is not enough and emphasized the need for Japan to enhance its own defense capabilities. His talk was followed by an open Q&A, with questions ranging from aspects of economic dependency to potential support from EU states. Thank you to all who were able to join us for this event!
