Guided tour of World War Two sites on Guam
w/ Anthony BocciaAnthony Boccia will lead a day trip to five historical sites on Guam from the Second World War, centered around the American retaking of the island in 1944 and the stiff Japanese defense. There will be historical context provided to augment the national monuments already in place.
The itinerary for the day is:
0900– Meet up at T. Snell Newman Visitor’s Center (Google Maps)
0900-1030: World War Two in the Pacific Visitor’s Center
1100-1200: Agat Unit at Ga’an Point
Brief pause for lunch (next stop roughly 15 minutes away, many food options available)
1330-1515: Asan Ridge and Invasion Beach
1530-1630: Piti Guns
1700-1745: Asan Bay Overlook
1800 - Optional dinner and drinks at Carabao Brewery
Participants should be prepared for approximately 5 hours of outdoor walking. We will drive to each destination. Participants are advised to dress appropriately and take precautions, such as using neck coolers, hats, and similar measures. Break opportunities will be limited to facilities at the monuments. It is advised to bring your own drinks and sunscreen. Bring insect repellent as the hike to Piti Guns and Asan Ridge (about 5-10 minutes each) is through the jungle. There will be a short lunch break while we transit from the Agat Unit at Ga’an Point to Asan Beach, roughly 15 minutes away. The last stop is Asan Bay overlook where participants can see the sun setting over the Philippine Sea. There will be an optional dinner and drinks at Carabao Brewery in Hagatna. The group size will be limited so please RSVP early.
